Nima Etemadi
Co-founder, Cake Life Bake Shop

Nima Etemadi grew up in Vancouver after his family immigrated from Iran. His upbringing as a first-generation North American shaped his food lens, together with a strong interest in both French cuisine and the foodways of the American South. He graduated from culinary school and worked in kitchens and catering before attending Sarah Lawrence College, where he met his best friend and future business partner, Lily Fischer.

After earning his degree, Etemadi worked as assistant editor at Aperture, a non-profit photography magazine and publishing house, but office life soon gave way to another round of culinary school – this time at the French Culinary Institute (now International Culinary Center) studying pastry arts.

In 2012, Etemadi moved to Philadelphia to found Cake Life Bake Shop with Fischer, first located in the Globe Dye Works building before moving to its flagship location in Fishtown. A proud transgender business owner, he hopes to see more members of the LGBTQ+ community start businesses of their own.

Triple Bottom Champion Nominees

This year’s award winner will serve as SBN’s Triple Bottom Champion Ambassador, helping to amplify their commitment to sustainability and presenting next year’s award, will receive a complimentary year of free membership, and a certificate during this year’s Annual Members Meeting.

Feast Your Eyes is an experiential catering and events company grounded in the belief that exceptional hospitality has the power to uplift people and strengthen community. With a people centered culture, Feast makes sure every team member feels supported and valued. They are equally committed to environmental stewardship through local sourcing, seasonal menu development, food-waste reduction, composting partnerships, and continuous efforts to reduce our operational footprint across both our kitchen and on location at events.

Glitter was born from a simple idea: that everyone deserves to live on a clean, safe block—and that neighbors can come together to make that happen. Since 2021, Glitter has built a unique, pay-what-you-can model that pools small contributions from residents and businesses to fund weekly block cleaning. The service is delivered by local cleaners, many of whom face barriers to employment and are earning a living wage averaging $30/hour plus profit sharing.

This model has allowed Glitter to clean thousands blocks and remove over 1,000,000 pounds of litter, while providing meaningful, dignified work for 34 Philadelphians—75% of whom face barriers to employment including being formerly incarcerated. They are proud to now serve over 1,400 active subscribers across 350 blocks, and are continuing to grow with new city partnerships and grant-funded projects in areas like Germantown, West Philly, and Northeast Philadelphia.

Glitter’s work directly contributes to all three pillars of the triple bottom line:

People: At our core we are helping neighbors come together to solve hyper local problems by building connection and community pride through collaboration.

Planet: By removing trash from our ecosystem we are preventing stormwater pollution and reducing environmental harm through regular block-level cleanups.

Profit (with purpose):  We prioritize equitable hiring and living wages as well as profit sharing to our whole team.

Strategy Arts is a planning and facilitation consulting firm with an emphasis on equitable community engagement. Since our founding in 2003 we have been guided by a set of principles centering humanity and being good stewards of the earth. When B Lab was established it gave a structure to our values and we became a founding B Corp and in 2019 a Best for the World honoree. We also had the honor of being part of the founding board of SBN and our Managing Partner, Elizabeth Guman, served as co-chair with Judy Wicks.

Strategy Arts works directly with marginalized communities and the organizations serving them on many societal issues such as high rates of economic insecurity, food insecurity, disproportionate rates of infant and maternal mortality and morbidity, reentry issues and more. We know all too well that these disparities predominantly affect Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and that understanding root causes of these disparities is a requirement for changing the system.

To engage in this work we do extensive professional development, including unpacking internal bias for privileged identities and support and healing for marginalized identities. In our client work, we incorporate equitable practices relevant to the processes required for the project that range from ensuring marginalized voices are included through stakeholder engagement, incorporating equitable norms in meetings, training on equitable practices for clients and equity audits. We continue to develop a strong internal culture that values each of our team members through our policies and our collaborative working processes. Our latest project has been to learn about and incorporate self-governance practices to deepen our commitment to shared decision-making and power.

In 2025, their Find Your Power program trained 100 students, employed 27 paid interns, and extended 8 full-time offers—up from 5 interns and 3 hires the year before. To date, they’ve trained 600+ people through partnerships with Philadelphia OIC, PowerCorpsPHL, and the Energy Coordinating Agency.

PLANET: Their 2,000+ installed systems have saved customers $15+ million in avoided electricity costs and kept millions of pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere. Solar States makes solar accessible to ALL in our communities.

PROFIT: Seventeen years in business, driven by reputation and referrals. They avoid high-pressure sales tactics and instead find sensible solar+storage solutions for homeowners and businesses across the region.

What sets PWP apart from other companies is their combination of experience, instincts, and ability to thoroughly understand the organizations they serve. PWP knows that nonprofits have to stretch every creative dollar and, above all, serve the mission of the organization in the most effective way possible. They serve nonprofits, their staff has worked with nonprofits, it is a part of their culture and who they are as people. This experience enables PWP to produce media that enlightens and moves viewers by telling thoughtful and respectful stories of real people, while understanding pacing, visual interest, and purpose. PWP is built on courtesy, honesty, creativity, and successful communication. This recipe has led to them developing long-term client relationships with like-minded organizations.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – On Thursday, May 2, the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN) recognized Crust Vegan Bakery as its inaugural Food Saver Challenge winner during a closing ceremony.

Close to fifty business owners, advocates, and community members from Philadelphia’s local food scene gathered at Crust Vegan Bakery’s kitchen facility in the Manayunk section of Northwest Philadelphia to congratulate Crust on winning the title of 2024 Food Saver Champion and celebrate the challenge’s conclusion.

SBN Executive Director Devi Ramkissoon kicked off the ceremony by acknowledging that throughout the six-month challenge, the participating businesses and partners contributed to advancing Philadelphia’s goal to divert 90% or more of the City’s waste away from the landfill by 2035 and fostering a culture that bridges food equity and waste reduction. As a result, all the participating businesses composted nearly 80,000 pounds of food and donated almost 6,000 pounds of food with a retail value of over $80,000. “By participating in the challenge, we hope that these businesses gained valuable insights into their own food waste patterns, identified areas for improvement, and implemented shifts in their practices that can be sustained in the long term,” shared Ms. Ramkissoon in her opening remarks.

After, Ting Wang, Director of Business Advocacy for the Department of Commerce at the City of Philadelphia, presented a citation on behalf of the City to Crust Vegan Bakery for winning the challenge and contributing to the City’s goals of waste reduction. “The City of Philadelphia is committed to working with small businesses from across the City to foster practices that prevent and manage waste, but also supports the businesses leading this charge,” Wang shared. “I’d like to present this Citation to Crust Vegan Bakery for their commitment to sustainability and creativity in preventing food waste.”

Meagan Benz, owner of Crust Vegan Bakery, and her team took to the podium to receive the Citation from the City of Philadelphia, a trophy created by Remark Glass, and a $5,000 check. “I’m incredibly proud that we won this challenge and that SBN launched it,” Benz shared. “SBN has long been a champion of small, sustainable businesses – like my own – and I hope they continue to support businesses to explore food waste reduction practices.”

At the event’s close, Ms. Ramkissoon acknowledged the eight Food Saver Challenge participants for their dedication and commitment to preventing, redistributing, and composting food waste throughout the challenge, each with a certificate. Aside from Crust, the other participating businesses included Philly Foodworks, Philadelphia Catering Company, Bar Hygge, Old City Coffee, LUHV, High Fidelity Bakery, Mariposa Food Co-op, and Reading Terminal Market

The Food Saver Challenge was also made possible by the support of partners, including Sharing Excess, Philly Food Rescue, Bennett Compost, Circle Compost, ClearCOGS, and Drexel Food Lab, whose commitment to reducing food waste made the challenge a resounding success.

SBN’s Executive Director Devi Ramkissoon reflects on her time and the meals she had in Uttarakhand, India, and the inspiration to launch Farm to Fork, SBN’s dining event with River Twice that highlights our region’s food producers, raises awareness about the importance of local food sourcing, and promotes sustainable practices within the culinary industry.

In the summer of 2009, I ate some of the best meals of my entire life.

I worked in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, India on an integrated farming campus that supported agribusiness and social enterprise opportunities for local communities. All of our meals came directly from the farmlands on which we worked. The food was always seasonal, nutritious, and flavorful. The community learned how to adjust their growing techniques and products to align with the ever-changing climatic patterns, building resilience practices into their lives. Without access to refrigeration, food that was not consumed each day was repurposed for future meals or fed to farm animals.

Those experiences and practices in Uttarakhand stayed with me long after I left. So much so that when I began as Executive Director of SBN in 2022, I wanted to bring those experiences to our organization and the scores of food businesses in our region.

Last year, we launched our Local Food Systems Initiative, which focuses on reducing food waste within our region, strengthening the connections between local food suppliers and food businesses, and highlighting regenerative agricultural practices. In addition to launching our Food Saver Challenge earlier this year, I’m proud to announce our Farm to Fork dining event with River Twice on Wednesday, September 20. This event carries forward many of the themes that went into creating the beautiful meals I ate while in Uttarakhand – local, seasonal, nutritious, and delicious food with a mind toward food waste reduction.

At SBN’s Farm to Fork dinner with River Twice, guests will indulge in a delectable menu prepared by River Twice chef Randy Rucker, who is known for his innovative and environmentally-conscious approach to cuisine. They will also have the chance to meet local suppliers from Wyebrook Farm and Local 130 Seafood for a discussion on how these practices tie into their businesses. All proceeds from the event will go towards our local food systems work so that we can continue to support food businesses in our region that uphold the principles of localism, waste reduction, seasonality, and all-around sustainability in their work. The cost of the charitable dinner is $300 per person ($500 for couples), which is inclusive of beverages, tax, and gratuity.

From the dinner plates provided by Felt & Fat, to the beverages provided by Human Robot, Mural City Cellars, and the Random Tea Room & Curiosity Shop, to the bespoke candles provided by Old City Canning Co., no detail has been overlooked when selecting the businesses we have chosen to showcase that evening. All these partners are deeply aligned with SBN and River Twice’s values regarding sustainability, respect for the environment, and support for local communities.

I hope you join us for an unforgettable evening filled with superb food, great conversation, and a celebration of our region’s local food producers, their artistry, and their commitment to building resilient practices in their work. Tickets are selling out quickly, so I hope to see you secure your seat today!

Devi Ramkissoon

It’s a fact that sustainable businesses today significantly improve our planet, community, and our economy.

Yet, it’s becoming more challenging for small, values-driven businesses to stand out among their competitors. Greenwashing and a lack of transparency make it harder for consumers to tell the “real deal” from companies that may follow through on their practices. When used correctly, sharing a business’ impact story shows people and businesses as active change agents, helping to humanize your brand and bring your key values to life while also inspiring audiences themselves to act.

Last month, SBN hosted a workshop with public relations expert Edel Howlin of Untapped Communications on how to construct and share their impact stories with local businesses. Edel shared her guidance with various businesses and organizations ranging from food companies, waste management, communications firms, video production companies, and non-profits focused on water and the environment. She reviewed her proven strategies for refining mission statements and attracting press attention, including considering the timeliness of submitting stories to media, crafting quotes with an emotional appeal, and highlighting the novelty of a business’ work.

Edel helped Mike Bennett from Bennett Compost his customers visualize how much 70 tons of trash is – 7-8 school buses worth of trash.

With her coaching, Marc Coleman of The Tactile Group crafted a simple and effective mission statement in 10 minutes, which was so compelling that it generated applause around the room!

By the end of the program, businesses learned how impact storytelling could go a long way in cutting through the noise while telling honest, genuine and stories about your business’s sustainability efforts.
